
A lower Powder Index does not mean a bad ski season, less total snow, or that you should avoid that resort. The score measures each mountain's opportunity to outperform its own historical snowfall during the 2026–27 season.
The Powder Bound 125 is not a ranking of the best and worst ski resorts in America, nor is it a prediction of which mountains will receive the most total snowfall.
The Powder Index measures something much more specific: each resort’s opportunity to outperform its own historical snowfall during the 2026–27 season.
That distinction matters.
A resort with a Powder Index of 4.0 could still receive considerably more snow than a resort scoring 7.0. The lower score simply means our analysis sees less evidence that the resort will significantly outperform what is normal for that particular mountain.
Likewise, a lower Powder Index should not be interpreted as a recommendation to avoid a resort. Some of North America’s most consistently snowy mountains may appear farther down this year’s forecast simply because the prevailing climate pattern is less favorable for exceeding their already impressive historical averages.
Ski conditions are also determined by much more than seasonal snowfall totals. Individual storm cycles, elevation, temperature, snow preservation, terrain, exposure, snowmaking, grooming and resort operations can all contribute to an outstanding ski season, even during a winter that finishes near or below its long-term snowfall average.
This is a snowfall-opportunity forecast, not a resort-quality ranking.
The Powder Index is Powder Bound’s proprietary 1–10 scoring system designed to estimate the relative opportunity for a ski resort to outperform its historical snowfall during the coming season.
To build the 2026–27 forecast, we analyzed 125 U.S. ski resorts using a combination of seasonal climate guidance, historical snowfall performance and resort-specific characteristics.
Our analysis incorporates NOAA Climate Prediction Center guidance, National Weather Service climate data, North American and international seasonal model guidance, historical El Niño analog winters, resort snowfall histories, regional storm-track tendencies, elevation, snow-level sensitivity and the degree of agreement among the available forecast signals.
We also reviewed longer-range outlooks such as the Farmers’ Almanac as supplemental context. These sources were not weighted equivalently to modern atmospheric modeling or official climate guidance.
Powder Index: A 1–10 measure of the opportunity for a resort to outperform its own historical snowfall. A higher number represents a stronger positive seasonal signal—not necessarily a higher total snowfall.
Confidence: Our assessment of how strongly the available forecast signals agree. Higher confidence indicates greater consistency among seasonal models, historical analogs and regional climate signals. It does not mean the projected outcome is guaranteed.
Projected Snowfall vs. Normal: The anticipated range for seasonal snowfall compared with that resort’s historical normal. For example, 110–130% means our forecast sees an opportunity for the resort to finish approximately 10–30% above its typical seasonal snowfall.
Best Window: The portion of the season when we believe the larger-scale pattern provides the strongest opportunity for favorable snowfall. It does not predict specific storms or guarantee good conditions on particular dates.
Seasonal forecasting deals in probabilities, not certainties. The atmosphere does not read our spreadsheet. A single major storm cycle can dramatically alter a resort’s season, while small changes in storm track, temperature or snow level can produce very different outcomes between mountains only a short distance apart.
The Powder Bound 125 therefore should be used as one piece of information when considering the 2026–27 ski season - not as a reason to book, cancel or avoid a particular destination.
Actual snowfall, terrain availability, lift operations, road conditions and skiing conditions can vary substantially throughout the season. Travelers should always consult current resort conditions, official weather forecasts and local information when making travel decisions.
